The Friends recently awarded a grant to purchase art materials for Pewsey Alzheimers Support Art Class. This is a weekly art group for people living with dementia and their family carers. Creating art can be therapeutic in all stages of life. Art has been shown to be particularly helpful for people with dementia, who can enjoy the process of painting, drawing and being creative, and feel a sense of achievement with their finished work. Art groups support people to retain skills, but are also suitable for those with no artistic experience.
In a lovely thank you card designed by members of the group and pictured above, there were a number of messages including the following:“Thank you for supporting our Art Group. The staff are always so welcoming and brighten our week. The activities provide a welcome period of mindfulness, a much needed break from daily cares.” Christine – Wife of a lovely man with Altzheimers.
“With no rights or wrongs, art is a place in which I can lose myself with nothing to be concerned about. All the while being in the company of friends to share thoughts and efforts with. Thanks Alzheimer’s Support for providing a place to explore and keep my mind ticking over.”
“I very much enjoy all the different activities we do. Everyone is so friendly. I look forward to coming every week.”
